Instructions for Participants Competing for C.
Gordon Van Arman Awards
The goal of the Van Arman Awards is to encourage young scientists (candidates for advanced degrees: M.S., Ph.D., M.D., D.O., D.D.S., D.V.M., and first year post doctoral fellows) to perform exploratory and applied research in inflammation.
Cash Awards
First Prize: $2,000, Second Prize: $1,000, Third Prize: $750, and Two honorable mentions: $500.
Expenses Paid for the Five Finalists

- Room and board at meeting
- Travel: Economy air fares (supersavers) and other ground and rail transportation (final approval for travel plans is required, no later than three weeks before the Conference — please contact

Olson, Chairperson of Scholarship Committee).
Procedure

Use
abstract form designated for Van Arman Awards. Abstracts
not selected for participation in the Van Arman Award
competition will be included with the general abstracts to
be considered for a Mini-symposium or Poster presentation
unless otherwise indicated.

Submit mini-paper using,
Inflammation Research 53: Suppl 3, 2004 (Download PDF file),
as the official format. The mini-papers must be submitted
electronically as a Microsoft Word document or as a PDF
file to Lisa Olson
(lisa.olson@abbott.com)
by May, 1 2010. PDF files are preferred if the paper
contains special symbols such as Greek letters. The five finalists will be notified by
July 2, 2010.

Submit a current Curriculum Vitae with the mini-paper.

Prior
to the Conference, the Scholarship Committee will select
five finalists, based on contestants’ mini-papers that
will be evaluated in the following categories: a)
originality of research; b) interpretation of data; c)
presentation of data and statistical analysis; d) format
and clarity of writing; and e) methods and techniques.

During the Conference, the Committee will evaluate the
candidates’ knowledge of the field, and relevance and
implication of their research. The poster presentation
(open to Scholarship Committee only) will be a 10-15 min.
question/answer session, and the oral presentation (open
to all meeting attendees) will be a 10 min. slide/5 min.
discussion (i.e., FASEB format). The Scholarship Committee
will base its final selection using weighted scores from
its previous evaluation of the mini-paper (25%), and from
the poster (50%) and oral presentation (25%) at the
meeting.
